SMEs in Wales are building on confidence and recruiting new staff, research reveals

SMEs in Wales are displaying renewed confidence in their business prospects, which is translated into job creation, latest research from the Federation of Small Businesses has revealed.

According to a report in the local business media, the FSB’s Voice of Small Business Index for the fourth quarter of 2013 shows that a small positive balance of Welsh SMEs (1%) said they had increased the number of people that they employ, the first time that the figure has entered positive territory since the Wales index was launched in the third quarter of 2010.

The better hiring intentions figures come as the index showed that a majority of small businesses in Wales (+4%) remain confident of an improving outlook for their business. However, confidence has dipped from a positive balance of +15 in the third quarter, and confidence in Wales remains below that for the UK as a whole.

The rise in small businesses taking on staff may be linked to the fact that small businesses are seeing profits stabilise. Of those firms questioned a balance of +5% reported an increase in turnover in the fourth quarter.
