Unemployment in Wales has bucked the national trend by falling for the second consecutive month. The total number out of work between October and December last year dropped by 3,000 to 134,000. But unemployment was 12,000 higher than at the same time in 2010 and at 9% Wales’ unemployment rate is higher than the UK average of 8.4%. Welsh secretary Cheryl Gillan said: “We are seeing some encouraging signs that things are improving. Recovery from the worst deficit in peace-time history takes time.”
