Recovery of the Welsh building industry threatened by labour and material costs
Rising cost of labour and building materials could pose a serious threat to the recovery of the Welsh building segment, the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has warned.
According to a media news report, there was a positive net balance for workloads across member organisations in the third quarter of 2013, but salaries and material costs are also predicted to continue rising over the next six months, which could have a knock-on effect on prices.
Richard Jenkins, director of FMB Cymru, said: "Construction SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) have battled to maintain staffing and capacity while trying to keep prices competitive.
"Material costs have remained high throughout 2013, and further increases could snuff out this recovery in its infancy, especially if companies that have cut their profit margins to the bone to beat the recession are now forced to pass on those costs to their customers."
