Plans put forward for 500-house development in Newport
A residential development company has recently put forward a proposal for building up to 500 homes on the 42-acre former Whiteheads steelworks site in the Pillgwenlly area of Newport, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.
The Whiteheads Development Company believes that its development plan could provide a £140m economic boost to the area and lead to the creation of more than 1,500 jobs, especially since it would also include a 50-bed care home, pub/restaurant, retail units and a new two-form primary school.
The site is an area of brownfield land previously occupied by a steelworks. The Whiteheads plant was opened in the 1920s with more than 2,000 workers employed there at its peak. It was closed in 2005.
Whiteheads Development Company has previously secured planning consent for works needed to prepare the site ready for construction.
A design and access statement prepared by Powell Dobson Architects on behalf of the developer said: "The proposal is an opportunity to create a sustainable residential development on a previously developed site.
"A positive contribution to the number of affordable homes available in Newport will be made through the proposal.”
