There are fears for the knock-on effect of 500 workers losing their jobs in Port Talbot, while it is expected that 80 more cuts will occur in the Welsh steel industry. Unite union Wales secretary Andy Richards declared the news as a “dark day for Welsh workers and for the steel industry in Wales”. The owners, Tata, will restart one of two blast furnaces at Port Talbot in the first quarter of next year as part of a £250 million investment programme.
