HR is a vital but often overlooked specialism for Welsh SMEs
Business Wales has launched a campaign to help Welsh SMEs to develop robust HR strategies, as part of a drive to make sure that policies and procedures are in place and that legislation is being adhered to.
Business Wales, funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, supports the sustainable growth of small and medium size enterprises across the country by offering access to information, guidance and business support.
Cathryn Edwards, a human resources adviser at Business Wales, explains: “Good practice in Human Resource Management is fundamental to running an efficient business with well-motivated staff and a satisfied client base.
“Our specialist HR team consists of experienced professionals and employment lawyers who can provide a wide range of fully-funded support.
"We have launched this campaign to let more Welsh SMEs know that they can access our service free of charge – we can help start-ups to recruit their first employee or apprentice, highlight key issues relating to contracts of employment, the legal aspects of employing staff, company handbooks and policies, while also supporting growing businesses with employee engagement, performance management, discipline, grievance and capability issues.”
This is not a new direction for Business Wales, as hundreds of Welsh businesses have already been helped by their specialist HR support.

Our time and attendance system has many features which can benefit a developing HR department. Most obviously, the attendance data from people clocking in and out – or not – can be used as part of an attendance management policy.
The system identifies staff who are not in work when they should be, and will send email reports of this automatically. Colour-coded absence codes can be used to fully categorise all absences. Employee Bradford Factor scores are automatically calculated throughout a 6- or 12-month period, helping HR staff gain reliable absence data.
Our system also makes it easy to create reports, with a number of customisable templates and a report wizard to guide you through the process. Advanced users can make use of the fully-fledged report designer, which can fine-tune all possible elements of your personal report format. Reports can be generated on demand or scheduled for automatic printing, and saved in a variety of file formats including Excel XLS and Adobe Acrobat PDF.
The HR Module of our time and attendance system gives HR staff a clear place to record vital information such as employee contact details and training details. All the information can be displayed and amended, though changes must be authorised by the employee’s manager before they appear.
