Up to 90 jobs are under threat at the Aberpergwm Colliery. The owners are concerned about the implications of the plan for a wind farm near its site, near Glynneath, which it says could “sterilise” land for mining.
The basic salary of councillors has increased in 14 of Wales’ 22 local authorities this year. At the other eight councils, members’ basic pay will be cut. There has also been a change to council leaders and other post holders’ pay.
Neath Port Talbot Hospital will no longer handle emergency cases from the end of Tuesday (August 21, 2012), due to a lack of sufficiently qualified doctors.
Nick Ramsay AM, the Conservatives’ spokesman for business, enterprise, technology and science, said he hoped the Port Talbot and Llanwern steel workers facing reduced hours would be offered support.
Some 20 jobs will be created at the Gwynt y Mor wind farm off the north Wales coast. The wind vessels will operate from Flintshire’s Port of Mostyn, where part of the turbines are built.
Repairs are needed straight away at Swansea Prison to prevent a potential safety hazard. Swansea Council has received an application for remedial work at the prison, which dates back more than 150 years.
