Up to 250 new jobs created as new fighting vehicle factory opens in Merthyr Tydfil
Up to 250 new jobs are likely to be created in Merthyr Tydfil after a former forklift factory has been redeveloped into an engineering base that will produce the next generation of fighting vehicles for the British Army, a news report in the local business media has been able to suggest.
General Dynamics UK has turned the former Linde Forklift Truck factory in Merthyr Tydfil into an assembly, integration and testing centre for the Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) after securing a £390m commitment to the Ajax armoured vehicle by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
In addition to the 250 jobs being created at the Merthyr Tydfil facility, the programme will preserve 300 jobs at General Dynamics in nearby Oakdale as well as a further 2,250 jobs at more than 210 companies across the UK supply chain.
Kevin Connell, vice president of General Dynamics Land Systems-UK, added: "Today’s inauguration reaffirms our commitment to delivering world-leading AFVs to the British Army from the UK, and firmly establishes Wales as the home of the UK’s AFV industry."
