Jenkins Bakery set for significant expansion

The Jenkins Bakery, who was established by David and Elizabeth Jenkins in Llanelli in 1921, is set to invest £350,000 into expanding part of its manufacturing operations in order to cope with the superior level of demand brought on by the four new stores is plans to open over 2014.

Currently managed by the 3’rd generation of the same family, the bakery employs about 300 staff across 27 shops in Swansea, Ammanford, Llanelli, Burry Port and Skewen, just to name a few.

David Jenkins, commercial director with Jenkins Bakery, said the group was also expecting to reach a turnover close to £9m by the end of next year.

"This investment will total about £350,000 and further automate our savoury production line, extending the site into a vacant building next door and increasing the size from 3,500 to 7,000 sq ft. We should complete this extension in the early part of next year, we have little borrowings from the bank and things look very encouraging for the future” he added.

The chain, which had just five shops in 1990, is due to open a new site in the Briton Ferry area of Neath this month while the company has already earmarked another undisclosed site.
